Teaser Tuesday: The Rules for Disappearing by Ashley Elston

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.
To play along just do the following:
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

The Rules for Disappearing by Ashley Elston.

The Rules for Disappearing –
Disney-Hyperion

I’m afraid he’s either one step from calling bullshit on my whole existence or asking me out on a date. Neither good.
— Chapter 7

I stop in the middle of the sidewalk—footsteps behind me. I turn around quickly and branches on a bush next to the sidewalk shake and there’s a snapping noise like someone stepping on dead leaves.
— Chapter 11

I’m not a hundred percent sure what to make of this one yet. And I’m already more than halfway through. Usually, this tells me that I most likely won’t find what I was looking for in the second half of the book either. But in some way, I’m still curious enough to find out what is happening to this girl and her family to keep reading ... Granted the concept isn’t the invention of the wheel, but the characters are likable enough and the writing is humorous but not overly trying to be hip. Although I sometimes wonder what a shallow person the girl must have been before everything happened to her.

Is the main character of your book a likable one? What makes you continue reading apart from a story's characters? Sound off in the comments and let us know about your teasers.

Hmmm...good questions. My standards on what keeps my attention for a book constantly changes. I either read because I love the characters, I love the plot, and/or I simply love the writing style. I hope you end up enjoying your book more.

I need a good plot that moves along to keep my interest or at least something so outrageous that I have to keep going to see what happens next. This book doesn't sound like one I would like.

Mmmm, sorry, but doesn't catch my interest, either.

I've been wanting to read The Rules for Disappearing, think I'll give it a miss now though. I'll probably read it eventually though.

I'm not totally sure on mine at the moment either, she's likeable I guess, for the situation they're in. I guess it differs, but so far I'm liking her.

Characters are the main thing I look for in a book, the plot can be original, and interesting and whatever but if the main characters are boring or unlikeable I won't keep reading. But, I guess if the writing compelling enough, I can carry on.

I love these questions. I have only just begun to read the book that holds my TT for this week so I am not able to answer those questions yet. Check out my TT here: http://meandu-justthinking.blogspot.ca/2013/09/teaser-tuesdays-excerpt-from-agatha.html

Good teasers and good questions you pose. I have a hard time with books where I don't like the MC too, unless that is the intention of the book.

Do we need to like characters in order to enjoy a book? I found that with a book yesterday - awful character (also the narrator) but fantastic writing.

Your teasers do intrigue me. Here's mine: http://writenotereviews.wordpress.com/2013/09/03/teaser-tuesday-i-am-pilgrim-by-terry-hayes/
