Teaser Tuesday: Memory by Christoph Marzi

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.
To play along just do the following:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Memory - Stadt der Träume (Memory - City of Dreams) by Christoph Marzi

So yes, this book is written in German and, as far as I’m aware, has not yet been scheduled for translation. But as Marzi is one of my favourite magicians with words I thought I’d give you a little peek into this book. Translations are mine.

Memory - Arena Verlag

Die Stunde, in der das Mädchen ohne Namen seine Geschichte verlor, war die letzte des Tages.
--The hour in which the girl without a name lost her story was the last of the day. --
pg. 7

Vielleicht würden auch sie bald spüren, dass es dort keine Geister mehr gab, dass die Träume der Toten auf immer entschwunden waren.
-- Perhaps they too would soon feel that no spirits were lingering there anymore, that the dreams of the dead had vanished forever. -- pg. 180

Memory is related to Marzi’s Heaven (City of Fairies) in the sense that it is set in the same city (London!) and story universe. There are small connections between the two, but you can read one without having read the other. And as a matter of fact, Heaven has just been published in English by Orchard Books. Have a look at it if you are partial to finely wrought stories with subtle fantastic elements. And for Geman readers I’d very much recommend that you ckeck out Marzi’s other works, if only to see how beautifully the words dance under his command.

Intriguing teasers. I love the cover to the book too.
